About

Kirsty Coleman (b. 1968) came to clay after two decades in textile design, first working the American market and later Europe and the Far East.

The sculptures are made in her studio: raku and black clay, oxides, gold leaf and glaze, built up into richly textured skins. Early work included small animals. The present pieces are human figures — weathered, still, and made by hand — with a quiet strength rather than a loud one.

She keeps testing what the material will take
